The Beijing-backed election committee has elected John Lee as Hong Kong’s new leader with 99 percent of the vote.
John Lee received 1,416 out of 1,500 votes in Sunday’s secret ballot by-election. In addition to being the sole candidate in this election, with the support of Beijing and 786 nominations by the Election Committee, it was hoped that John Lee would easily win the election. John Lee will replace current leader Kerry Lam from July 1 this year. Kerry Lam congratulated John Lee and said she would send the election results to Beijing.
In a statement, he said the current government would facilitate a peaceful transfer of power. According to him, all possible support will be provided to the new government to take power. This is the first time since the electoral reforms introduced last year that elections have been held in Hong Kong. These electoral reforms made it possible for only candidates who are loyal to Beijing and are patriotic to run in the elections. The legislature also paid attention to the fact that all dissenting voices could be suppressed. The mainland China Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the Yen State Council also congratulated Jan Lee on his victory.
The office said in a statement that the successful election proves that the electoral reforms being introduced here are effective and that they meet the “one country, two systems” framework for the Hong Kong government. The British government handed over the management of Hong Kong to China in 1997, which was governed by a “one country, two systems” framework. Unlike China, the framework was intended to protect Hong Kong’s political freedoms, including freedom of expression and the right to protest.
Critics say the freedoms have been eroding in recent years as China has tightened its grip on the former British colony.
