Nasir ud Din Mahmud Shah Tughluq
Nasir ud Din Mahmud Shah Tughluq was the last ruler of the Tughlaq Dynasty (1394 – 1413 CE). He was not a competent ruler. He was more involved in luxurious things than state affairs.
War of succession
After the death of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, Nasir-ud-Din Muhammad Shah III succeeded him. But soon he died and his son Nasir-ud-din Mahmud became the sultan in 1394. In the meantime, Nusrat Shah, a relative of Nasir-ud-din Mahmud also declared himself the sultan of the Delhi Sultanate. It sparked a three-year succession battle between Nusrat Shah and Nasir-ud-din that lasted until 1397. Nasiruddin Mahmud reigned from Delhi for these three years and Nusrat Shah reigned from Firozabad to the sultanate.
Reign of nasir ud din mahmud shah tughluq
- During his reign, there was a never-ending fight, and the misery reached its peak.
- The provinces of South India, Bengal, Khandesh, Gujarat, Malwa, Rajasthan, Bundelkhand, and others, declared independence from the Sultanate of Delhi during his reign.
- During his reign, a bisexual person named Malik Sarwar seized the Sultan’s title of “Malik-us-Sarkh” (Purvadhipati) and formed his realm in Jaunpur. After this Nasir-ud-din rule was limited to Delhi and Palam (nearby districts of Delhi).
Timur Invasion
Amir Timur, the Chagatai monarch, invaded India under Nasiruddin’s reign in 1398. He was given the name ‘Timur Lung’ since he was limp and only had one leg. Both Sultans Nasir-ud-din and Nusrat Shah evacuated their capitals, fearful of a Timur attack. Timur destroyed the cities and killed hundreds of thousands of people. He returned to his capital after spending 15-day in Delhi. He appointed Khizr Khan as Governor of Delhi.
He left the area after taking a large sum of wealth from Delhi. The Tughlaq dynasty came to an end after the invasion of Timur.
Successor
In 1414 the Governor of Delhi Khizr Khan founded the Sayyid dynasty.
