Why PML-N leadership went London ?: Nawaz Sharif’s possible role in decision making

The present government faces demands ranging from the ongoing constitutional crisis in Punjab to rising inflation, ongoing talks with the IMF, and urgent elections by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Meanwhile, Criticism is mounting over the departure of Shahbaz Sharif and his cabinet to London to meet Sharif.

Apart from Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Finance Minister Muftah Ismail, Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Sanaullah, and Attaullah will be part of the 10-member cabinet. Tarar is also included. In this age of technology, from large and small meetings of heads of state and companies worldwide to lectures and weddings, everything is happening on the video link, even from court decisions to meetings online. Meanwhile, rumors are circulating on social media in Pakistan that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has rejected a proposal to meet on the video link in this age of technology and consult the party’s senior leadership.

Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has said that party leaders, including Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, have gone to London on a personal visit to meet Nawaz Sharif. This meeting will be for political consultation. Talking to the media, she said, “This is a party delegation, and a consultation process is going on in PML-N.” We will continue to do what is best for the people of Pakistan. Talking to the media in London on Tuesday, Nawaz Sharif said, “Shahbaz Sahib will arrive in the morning. We will meet tomorrow. There are significant issues which will be discussed.”

While Maryam Aurangzeb called the meeting “political,” Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said, “this meeting has nothing to do with the political situation.” “This goodwill visit was pre-arranged, but we didn’t get the chance at first, and now we are getting it, so we are going to London for this visit,” he said. Most people are questioning the role of Mian Nawaz Sharif in the decision-making of the current government of Pakistan, and this also raises the question of what is the logic between going to London, again and again, to consult with Nawaz Sharif on every critical decision of the government. On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif is an escapee.

Not political consultation or Political

PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar said that it is a political consultant. “It has been a long time since we met the leader, and we have come to meet our leader,”  Attaullah Tarar declined to answer whether Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif would have to consult Nawaz Sharif before making any major decision. However, he acknowledged that Nawaz Sharif was the party’s leader and that all decisions were his. They are taken with advice, and no decisions are taken without consulting Nawaz Sharif. “It’s always been like that, and there should be no doubt about it,” he added.

According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, there is no doubt that the PML-N delegation has gone to London for political consultations, and there is no point in going there.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi believes that the government is not working, the system has stopped, the constitutional crisis in Punjab persists, and a larger bench of the Lahore High Court is looking into the resignation of Usman Bazdar and the appointment of Hamza Shahbaz as Chief Minister, and the Election Commission. The case of the 25 deviant members who voted against the party guidelines and violated Article 63A is being looked into. He also added Saudi Arabia and the UAE had made no significant progress.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi believes that even in these circumstances, there is no connection between the allies because the long-term interests of the allies are not the same. Citing the example of PPP, he said that PPP is part of the coalition government, but its interests are not linked to PML-N. He said that there was confusion in the PPP on the issue of Bilawal being a part of the cabinet and the party was divided.Shah Mehmood Qureshi claimed that two factions have also formed in PML-N: one section wants immediate elections because they believe that the difficult decisions they have to make will affect their popularity. At the same time, the other faction is in favor of completing the term. “It’s a mess,” he says.

He cited rising dollar prices, the rupee’s depreciation, the stock market slump, and the “no talking to the IMF” as a “serious crisis.”This is the crisis that needs to be addressed.

Pakistan People party’s  view

Pakistan Peoples Party is part of the coalition government. On the visit of Shahbaz Sharif and the cabinet, the PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said that Mian Nawaz Sharif is a leader of PMLn; he is crucial in decision making. However, he said that Nawaz Sharif was not making any administrative decisions from London.

Qamar-ul-Zaman Kaira said that Mian Shahbaz Sharif and the cabinet have the power to make decisions. We will definitely give, and if their suggestions are related to the executive order or our government, then the PML-N members will bring it to the cabinet, it will be discussed, and decision making will be done here together with the allies. But if that decision is about his party, then it is his party’s problem He says I don’t look at it as “decision-making is taking place in London; decision-making will take place here.
