Throughout his presidency, George Washington was a leader and unifier that shaped America.

Major Accomplishments

George Washington, who served as the first President of the United States from 1789-1797, is remembered for several significant accomplishments during his time in office.

Judiciary Act of 1789

One of these achievements was the Judiciary Act of 1789. This act established the Supreme Court and provided for the organization of lower courts throughout the states. It also cre

ated a system for granting federal jurisdiction to some instances and gave Congress the power to control and set regulations for how those cases were heard. The passage of Judiciary Act of 1789 provided an essential foundation for a judicial system that still exists today.

French Revolution of 1789

During his two terms in office, he oversaw several significant events and milestones, including the French Revolution of 1789. This event saw an absolute monarchy’s overthrowing and a constitutional government’s subsequent rise. The French Revolution was seen as a significant blow against despotism and for the cause of republicanism. It also marked the beginning of a global revolution that would spread to many countries throughout Europe.

 Tariff of 1789

During his presidency, he made numerous significant decisions that shaped our nation. One of his major items was the Tariff of 1789, which placed a duty on imports to raise funds for the federal government. This tariff was a protective measure to help encourage and foster industries in America, and it established a tax on imported goods that could harm American businesses. This tariff of 1789 was essential in establishing the new government and marked an important step in the evolution of a stable economy for America.

Whiskey Rebellion of 1794

During his presidency, he faced a significant challenge – the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. This rebellion, primarily an uprising of frontier farmers against federal taxation of distilled spirits, required a robust military response from Washington and his administration. To quell this rebellion and keep order in the young nation, Washington made an example out of those involved by personally leading an army through Pennsylvania to suppress it. Through this decisive action, he set the tone for how future presidents would handle similar matters.

Jay’s Treaty with England

He also negotiated and signed the Jay’s Treaty with England in 1794. This treaty helped to create peace between America and England, as well as established trade regulations. This Jay’s treaty showed that Washington was a strong leader who could help bring peace and order during tumultuous times.

Pickney Treaty with Spain

During his presidency, he negotiated the Pickney Treaty with Spain in 1795. This treaty established a boundary between Spanish Florida and the United States and granted American traders access to the port of New Orleans. It also gave Americans navigation rights on the Mississippi River, which was vital for trading with other parts of the country. The Pickney Treaty was a significant diplomatic accomplishment for Washington and set an example for future presidents.

First Bank of the United States

He established the First Bank of the United States in 1791. This financial institution was designed to regulate money and credit and manage federal debt. It operated until 1811, when it declined due to a lack of congressional rechartering. The Bank was considered an essential milestone in developing the nation’s financial system.

George Washington Farewell Address

In his Farewell Address of 1796, Uss George Washington warned the newly formed United States of America against becoming too involved in foreign affairs. He encouraged them to stay focused on their own nation’s development and to “steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.” Washington further advised that solid political parties would cause division among citizens and warned against factions, which he viewed as a threat to national unity and stability. Ultimately, he wanted future generations to realize their incredible potential by striving for peace, harmony, and economic prosperity.

Uss George Washington passed away on December 14, 1799, at 67. His last words were, “I die hard, but I am not afraid to go. ‘Tis well.” His body was laid to rest at the Mount Vernon Estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia. George Washington’s legacy will forever be remembered as a founding father of a nation and one of its most influential Presidents.

“Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.”

“First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

After George Washington, John Adams was elected the second president of the United States.
